Tips to keep your garage door working smoothly
The cold winter weather is just around the corner, which means it is time to make sure that your garage is ready for the dropping temperatures. Keep these maintenance tips in mind to ensure that your garage stays looking and working its best!
- The door – Regularly clean your garage door with mild dish soap and a soft brush. Do not use strong cleaners or abrasive brushes that could damage the door. If you have a steel garage door, use car wax to protect it against dust and acidic rain.
- Exterior weather stripping – Clean the weather stripping with an all-purpose cleaner, and make sure to lubricate it with a silicone based lubricant every 2 or 3 months. If your weather stripping has lost its flexibility, make sure to replace it so that it works properly.
- Hardware – Lubricate all of the moving hardware, including hinges and tracks with a small amount of motor oil every 3 months. Use the same oil on the springs to help reduce the noise it makes when the door is opening. Make sure to check the sturdiness of the hinges and look for wear and tear on the tracks and cables at least once a year.
- Electric garage door opener – If your garage is noisy when opened using the motor, put a little bit of white grease on the tracks. Make sure that the track is clean before applying the grease. Also, make sure that all of the mobile parts are well oiled.
