Window Drafts
Your windows are one of the biggest problem areas in your house when it comes to energy efficiency. Even if you have caulked and weather-stripped windows, they can still be drafty. However, there is another factor to consider when cutting down your window drafts – window treatments. Keep these tips in mind to ensure that your house stays comfortable all year round.
- Cellular shades – also known as honeycomb shades, these window treatments work to trap cold air near windows. Shades that have more cells will trap more air, but are also less opaque, which means that they will let less light in.
- Hanging location – when hanging your blinds or shades, mount them inside your window casings to help minimize drafts. If you have to mount them on the outside, make sure that they completely cover the casing to trap as much cold air as possible.
- Go for layers – combine sheers, shades, and curtains to enjoy solar heat gain when you want it, and draft eliminating when you need it. Pairing close fitting drapes with a cornice can help to reduce the airflow around your windows by up to 25 percent.
- Consider the gap – all inside mounted window treatments should be installed ½ of an inch from the windowpane. They should fit snugly, just shy of touching all four sides of the opening to keep a tight seal.
